Container Gardening

What I'm Doing: Container Gardening

Thoughts: Last year I planted some seeds, but all my seedlings died on me a couple months into the project. I either over-watered them, or under-watered them, or, alternately, both. But, if at first you don't succeed and all that. So, I dragged everything onto the back porch and played in the dirt for a bit and planted some new seeds. The radishes have already sprouted. I'm excited. I will try not to smother them with water this time.

Having Lunch with My Brother

What I'm Doing: Having Lunch with My Brother

Thoughts: We met at Klay Oven on Orleans St. Doing the Indian buffet. Andy owed me a belated birthday lunch. They didn't have my favorite lamb curry today, but they did have Gulab Jamun, my favorite dessert. Yum.

Sewing a Button

What I'm Doing: Sewing a Button

Thoughts: I bought a wrap dress a few weeks ago that I love. It's emerald green, with little cap sleeves and a butterfly pattern. But before I could wear it out, I needed to sew a button inside the dress so I could secure the left side of the dress inside the right side, so there's something more than just the tie holding the dress together. The dress came with a plastic button sewn into the tag for this purpose, and the left side of the dress was already equipped with a little loop at the edge for securing around the button. So, half the work was already done for me. I put on the dress again, found the best spot for the button and spent a few minutes sewing it inside the dress.

Flossing

What I'm Doing: Flossing

Thoughts: Yesterday we went to see a matinee of Sex in the City at AMC River East. I decided it was going to be a "popcorn for lunch" kind of day. Of course I ended up with a popcorn kernel skin painfully stuck in one of my gums. It hurt like hell. I finally got it out--I think--when I flossed in the evening, but my gum is still sensitive today. Plus, I'm pretty sure I have a dentist appointment coming up, so I'm trying to be more diligent with my flossing, so I don't get the lecture from my dental assistant.

Huzzah!

I just successfully imported my first six records and associated images into MDID!

I can now view "Self Portrait as a Painter" by Vincent van Gogh, "Bird in Space" by Constantin Brancusi, "The Treason of Images" by Rene Magritte, "Object (Breakfast in Fur)" by Meret Oppenheim, "The Tower of Babel" by Pieter Bruegel and "Arrangement in Black and Gray (Portrait of the Artist's Mother)" by James McNeill Whistler. This may seem like a random group, but they are the first six images from the digital image set for A History of Western Art, 4th ed. by Laurie Adams, which is our current art history textbook. So, chapter one is done! Just 354 more images to go for this set.

I will write a longer post about the whole process soon--as soon as I feel confident about my process.

March was not the greatest month.

I experienced my first-ever killer migraine headache. The headache lasted five days. I spent my days at work wearing a baseball cap to shield my eyes from the flourescent lights, and spent the bulk of my evenings lying on the couch in the dark with a warm compress pressed against my eyes and forehead.

I'm still hoping the migraine was an anomaly and not my new fun problem. So far, so good.

At the end March I succumbed to the flu/sinus infection/cold that's been going around at work. I was sick for nearly two weeks, and it was the most sick I'd been in years. I'm still sniffling as the sinus infection lingers, but I'm so happy I'm no longer experiencing the crushing fatigue that came along with this thing.

Now there are some signs of hope. I finally had the energy to clean my apartment this past weekend. No more dust and flu germs hanging around. That gave me a brief feeling of accomplishment yesterday.

What else have I been up to? I splurged and renewed my subscriptions to the Lyric Opera and Chicago Shakespeare for next season. I'm already looking forward to Amadeus and Macbeth.

In books news, I recently finished The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman, which I enjoyed. Right now I am plodding my way through Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, trying to play "beat the clock" to finish it in time for next week's book club meeting.

At work I'm playing around with MDID, but I'll probably have much more to say on that later. I'm still in the "I have no idea what I'm doing phase" right now, but I am having fun getting back to my art historical roots and playing with images again.
